Many people have heard in the past two years about the term STEM. However, only some of them know what it is and how we can teach our children science, mathematics, technology, and engineering together in an integrated manner. Today, we will talk about some of the essential tips that can help you when you apply them to teach your children the concepts and skills of Steam at home effectively.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) has emerged as a fundamental concept in children’s education in the past five years because it has proven to help develop students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills.
Now prepare yourself for some tips on how to teach Steam from home:
1- Start with their interests: As with any subject, children are likely to be more engaged and motivated if they are interested in the topic. So, I’d like you to try to find ways to connect STEM concepts to the things your child is already interested in. For example, you can use car mechanics to teach engineering principles if they love cars.
2- Focus on the practical side: STEM is about experimentation and discovery, so incorporate practical activities and projects into the lessons a student learns. For example, this could be building a simple circuit using a breadboard and some LEDs.
3- Using Simple Materials: You don’t need expensive materials or specialized equipment to teach STEM at home. Instead, look for opportunities to use everyday materials, such as cardboard, paper, household items, and even from the kitchen, to illustrate STEM concepts.
4- Encourage: STEM is all about finding creative solutions to problems, so encourage kids to think outside the box and develop their own ideas.
5. Use technology: Some of the many resources and applications on the Internet can help make STEM lessons more interactive. For example, simulations and virtual games can teach children concepts such as physics and computer programming. (I will add some important links in the comments).
